Celia
loves her job working with elderly ‘independents’ in The Harbour Rest Home
teaching art and keeping the residents upbeat with her caring attitude and
respect for the fact that they still have a lot to offer society. They care
about her too. From the Colonel, who could only be described as Captain Mainwaring
from Dad’s Army Series who has his eye on one of the ladies of The Harbour
Rest, to Eleanor who is as extravagant and eccentric as they come. She is bossy
and opinionated to hide a past of secrets and heartache. Then there is lovely
little May who gives the impression of being a bit dotty but who is in fact a
clever and astute lady. As much as Celia loves her job, her partner Martin
doesn’t see it as being important at all and has little respect for the
wonderful work that Celia does. As far as he is concerned elderly means
worthless!
Celia’s
life takes a complicated turn with the arrival of a wrongly posted letter, a
prince charming in a uniform called Alex, who is ready and very willing to
rescue her and the imminent closure of The Harbour Rest Home. What will Celia,
cuddly mother of two, be able to do to save her ‘elderly independents’ from
being separated? Can Martin be trusted? Can Alex be trusted? Can her heart be
trusted? Can she be trusted to survive a charity abseil?
To
say I loved this book is a complete understatement. I instantly fell in love
with the characters and had such a soft spot for them all! They were funny,
kind, heart-warming and eccentric and one would have to have a heart of stone
not to feel affection for them. This, for me, is the sign of a good book. One
that makes you care about the characters. This book had me laughing so hard at
the antics of the elderly characters and Sheryl Browne has painted a picture of
high-spirited people who are not limited by their advancing years. The comedic
element to the book is in typical Sheryl Browne style and she has such a talent
for putting her characters in hilarious situations. The other characters in the
book are equally interesting and funny. Characters such as Celia’s son Luke is
another I particularly warmed to. And, as for Alex, the dishy officer of the
law………..well he made me a little hot and bothered! Another ohhh laaaa laaa
character for me!
Sheryl
Browne has created a feisty character in Celia. A woman who is full of
determination and bravery. She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes
is right. She has a good heart despite being a little bit ditzy at times. This
book is a lovely romantic comedy that I simply could not put down. It has a few
twists and turns throughout that totally surprise the reader and the plot is
fantastic, leaving you desperate to find out more. There’s a few shocks along
the way too! Another hit for Sheryl Browne. If you’ve never read any of her books
I suggest you do so right away. You will not be disappointed!
