Review + Giveaway: Another Rebecca by Tracey Scott-Townsend

Another Rebecca by Tracey Scott-Townsend
Release Date: 21st March 2015
Publisher: Inspired Quill
Genres: Contemporary Fiction

On the cusp of adulthood, Rebecca Grey has no idea where her life is headed. Like many of us, she struggles to build a sustainable identity, a task made even harder by the fact that her mother is engaged in an extended breakdown and her absent father has another family to worry about. Dealing with their problems leaves little time for her own, and pretty soon, something has to give. As she toils under the weight of a tragedy that was never hers to begin with, Rebecca faces the impossible task of carving out a future for herself, all the while shadowed by the mistakes of her parents. Told with an experienced voice through the eyes of three characters.

Another Rebecca tells the story of one family’s moving inability to let go of the past, of love lost and found, and a young woman’s determination to pull herself out of disaster.

Another Rebecca follows the lives of Rebecca, a 17 year old college student, her father Jack and her mother Bex. Told from the perspectives of Rebecca, her mother and her father it is such a sad book of love lost, grief, frustration and a desperate need to find a better life.

Rebecca is ultimately her alcoholic mother's carer. Every decision she makes always has her mother at the core. Rebecca feels lonely and stifled by all her responsibilities. She is desperately trying to become a part of her estranged father's life but he must overcome the obstacles put in front of him by his new wife Wendy.

Another Rebecca is  not the sort of book that races along but is told at a pace that I feel suits Rebecca's level of desperation. Whilst her mother Bex is not a very nice person, there are hidden depths to her too. She has never recovered from a heart broken through grief and a life of 'if only'. Rebecca's father Jack is at heart a kind man who did once adore Bex but was never able to be the person she truly wanted. He too is caught in the middle of Bex and her broken heart.

I really enjoyed this book and it tugged at my heart strings. I could empathise with the character of Rebecca who I felt portrayed a situation that many young people find themselves in. It was a heartbreaking and also heartwarming story and I'd recommend it. A really enjoyable read.
