The Cold Room by Karen Long
Series: Eleanor Raven #3
Release Date: 8th May 2017

The brand new thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the author of The Safe Word and The Vault.

Winter is settling on Toronto and a series of seemingly unconnected murders are weighing heavily on DI Eleanor Raven. When an army veteran holds his family hostage, leaving chaos and an unidentifiable skeletal human hand in his wake, Raven is left tangled in a web of leads, lies and secrets, with each thread leading her closer to the all too terrifying truth.

But with time running out, Raven needs to re-connect with her past life – the one she thought she’d finally escaped from – if she’s to find out who the killer is before they strike again . . .

I had the honour of reading this book when it was still in manuscript form and even then I knew what an absolute smash it was going to be. There are some books with the wow factor and this is certainly one of them.

Eleanor Raven is left feeling confused and unnerved by a series of murders in Toronto. Drawn into a case involving an army veteran and a human hand found at the scene, Eleanor Raven and her team are not only trying to piece together exactly how the hand came to be in the man's possession but they are also hitting brick walls with the military and the secrecy surrounding the man. And, as if Eleanor isn't busy enough, the city throws up more murders and tortured dead dogs and at times Eleanor begins to doubt her abilities as a detective all the while trying to reconcile her past. Her interactions with a psychiatrist, Dr Blackmore are confusing and upsetting and Eleanor isn't sure she trusts him entirely. Eleanor's own psyche is as tortured as the victims she encounters.

The Cold Room, while book 3 in the series can absolutely be read as a standalone. However, I do recommend The Safe Word ( currently on sale at 99p) and The Vault simply because they are stunning books that should be read for the pure enjoyment.

Karen Long's writing style is unique in that she can keep the reader hooked from the opening page right through to the last with interest never waning and she isn't afraid to push her characters to their limits. Although Eleanor Raven is bolshy, brave and doesn't give a damn about authority, we do see her vulnerable side from time to time and this adds a real human element to her. As much as Eleanor thinks she can slot her feelings and her past into neat little compartments, eventually they will bleed into her life and her career and the cases she is currently working on in this book test her to the limit. Can she keep her feelings and emotions in check or will the killer / killers manipulate her to their own ends.

In the Cold Room Karen Long has explored the psyche of a killer in a more in-depth way, and the reader gains some insight into motivations, history and environment which all impact on the state of mind of a murderer. I found this intriguing and although shocked by the enormity and brutality of the murders I could perhaps see and understand the killers reasoning behind them.

I absolutely and utterly loved this book and its top of my highly recommended reads. Its an edge of your seat ride that will shock and thrill you. For those fans of police crime dramas with a female detective who is not even slightly unnerved or threatened by her male counterparts then this is the book for you. In fact, it is Eleanor Raven who unnerves others............none more than any killer at large. Because, in the end Detective Raven always catches up with them.
