Author Interview: Lee Matthew Goldberg, author of The Mentor

The Mentor by Lee Matthew Goldberg
Release Date: 13th June 2017
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Genres: Thriller

Kyle Broder has achieved his lifelong dream and is an editor at a major publishing house.

When Kyle is contacted by his favorite college professor, William Lansing, Kyle couldn’t be happier. Kyle has his mentor over for dinner to catch up and introduce him to his girlfriend, Jamie, and the three have a great time. When William mentions that he’s been writing a novel, Kyle is overjoyed. He would love to read the opus his mentor has toiled over.

Until the novel turns out to be not only horribly written, but the most depraved story Kyle has read.
After Kyle politely rejects the novel, William becomes obsessed, causing trouble between Kyle and Jamie, threatening Kyle’s career, and even his life. As Kyle delves into more of this psychopath’s work, it begins to resemble a cold case from his college town, when a girl went missing. William’s work is looking increasingly like a true crime confession.

Lee Matthew Goldberg's The Mentor is a twisty, nail-biting thriller that explores how the love of words can lead to a deadly obsession with the fate of all those connected and hanging in the balance.

Thrilled to have author Lee Matthew Goldberg on the blog today with a great author interview. Thanks for joining us Lee. Lets find out a bit more about you!

Do you write under your real name or is this a pen name you use?

My real name.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Manhattan, New York

List 3 interesting facts about yourself.

My biggest influences have been David Lynch and Bruce Springsteen
I absolutely can’t stand milk but I love cheese
I secretly dream of being a reggae superstar

What was the first thing you ever had published?

My short story “The Silver Bullet” in the online literary magazine Orionheadless.

Do you have a writing routine?

Yes, I edit in the mornings, take a break and work-out and eat lunch, then I write all afternoon. Sometimes at night I’ll read over what I’ve written too.

Do you have any writing rituals?

When the weather is nice, I work out of Central Park with my laptop at my favorite tree. I do my best writing while in nature. In the winters, I write out of the famous library on 42nd St. in their large quiet room.

Where did the idea for your most recent book come from?

My editor Brendan Deneen had pitched the idea of Cape Fear set in the publishing world and hired me to take it in any direction I wanted. Adding a subplot of a cold case that the characters get involved in was an important way to heighten the suspense.

Who was the first person you shared your book with?

My agent Sam Hiyate at The Rights Factory was the first to read the entire manuscript.

Do you have a current work in progress?

Yes, I like to work on a bunch of projects at once. I have two books in a thriller trilogy, a Sci-fi book about a cult and a Young Adult one as well about a time traveling teen that have all been finished. I’m also collaborating with other writers on a screenplay and a TV pilot, which has been a lot of fun.

Do you have any advice for budding authors?

Edit and edit. You may think you’re finished, but there’s always another chance to review what you’ve written. Also learn how to take rejection. You are guaranteed to have to your work rejected, but if you really believe in your talent, hopefully you can find someone else to believe in it as well.
