Your darkest moment is your most vulnerable…
Stephen Berry
is about to jump off a bridge until a suicide prevention counsellor
stops him. A week later, Stephen is dead. Found at the bottom of a
cliff, DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner are drafted in to investigate whether he jumped or whether he was pushed…
As
they dig deeper, more would-be suicides roll in: a woman found dead in a
bath; a man violently electrocuted. But these are carefully curated
deaths – nothing like the impulsive suicide attempts they’ve been made
out to be.
Little do Callanach and Turner know how close their
perpetrator is as, across Edinburgh, a violent and psychopathic killer
gains more confidence with every life he takes…
I just flew back from holiday yesterday and I took this book to Portugal with me. There's nothing like lying in the sun with a good thriller. And, goodness me was this good! Its book 5 in the series but can absolutely be read as a standalone. However, I do think I might go back and read the entire series from start to finish as this book was so enjoyable.
Helen Fields thrills us with some amazing characters on a roller-coaster ride to catch a killer. Set in one of my favourite places Edinburgh, our main characters Ava and Luc are tasked initially with determining if someone committed suicide, fell or was pushed. All the evidence points to either suicide or misadventure except when one small detail is discovered at the autopsy. There's a killer on the loose and he's targeting those who are vulnerable.
I love a good psychopath and trying to fully understand their psyche so this was the perfect book for me. I love the writing style which almost urges the reader to direct the characters, wanting them to go in certain directions and do certain things. This was particularly evident in the relationship between Ava and Luc. There was so much tension in this book that it was palpable. The story-line was interesting and well thought out and Helen Fields has done an amazing job in bringing it all together into a thrilling book. Loved it and would highly recommend. However, if bringing on holiday, do remember to not become so engrossed in the book that you end up with burned legs because you forgot to top up your sun cream. Yup that was me!
