A girl is taken from the streets of Oxford. But it's unlike any abduction DI Fawley's seen before . . .
Faith Appleford was attacked, a plastic bag tied over her head, taken to an isolated location . . . and then, by some miracle, she escaped.
What's more, when DC Erica Somer interviews Faith, she quickly becomes convinced that Faith knows who her abductor is.
Yet Faith refuses to press charges.
Without more evidence, it's looking like the police may have to drop the case.
But what happens if Faith's attacker strikes again?
This is the second book in the Adam Fawley series that I've read and while its useful to know D.I. Fawley's background, I don't feel its entirely necessary to have read the other books in the series to be able to get stuck right into this one. Though, the calibre of the writing might make you change your mind and want to get totally immersed in the entire series.
A young girl is found wandering along a road by a taxi driver. She appears distressed with torn clothes. However, for some reason neither she or her family are keen to have the police involved. This immediately piqued my interest. Clearly a crime had been committed, and a serious one at that so why not help the police track down the person or persons who had done this to Faith. She's a college student who generally keeps herself to herself, throwing herself into her fashion course at college and your vlog. But, there's something about Faith that people don't know and as we soon discover, the real reason she doesn't want the police involved. Adam Fawley and his team need to convince her to work with them before another girl gets abducted and isn't lucky enough to escape. But, it may already be too late.
I found this to be a gripping story with lots of little clues interspersed throughout. I will admit to not being aware at first as to what Faith's secret was and I was frustrated by her and her family for their reluctance to cooperate with the police. However, once her secret is discovered I could completely understand why. However, it does complicated the motive behind the crime and D.I. Fawley must get to the bottom of why Faith was targeted. There's the obvious one, and the not so obvious one. That's all I'll say on that matter for fear of giving away too much. But, there's a predator at large and lives are at stake.
Interspersed throughout the book we hear from the perspective of Adam Fawley himself. He's a complex character with a lot going on in his personal life and doesn't find it easy to show his vulnerable side to his team. Sometimes to his own detriment. However, as a character I really liked him, despite his flaws. It showed a human side to him.
A great read and highly recommended.
Trigger warning: Some of the language can be quite explicit as you'd expect given the sexual nature of the crimes.
