From a peaceful country idyll, a village called Wattcombe to the ruins of the East End

From a peaceful country idyll, a village called Wattcombe to the ruins of the East End during wartime. This is nine-year-old Daisy Purbright’s journey and what a journey it was!

1938 brings great unrest in Europe - and Britain is soon facing Prime Minister Chamberlain’s failure to appease Germany. A year later war is declared and the East End is soon subject to a horrific blitz by the Luftwaffe and unprepared for the vicious aerial attacks on London.

Daisy is confronted by a whole new world and has to deal with an enormous change. Family disruption, heartache and illicit affairs - she watches it all - and keeps her secrets!

From a tranquil village school (left above) to the ruins of the Isle of Dogs. And all this because of a bad decision on the part of her entrepreneur father. But the outbreak of war is just the beginning of Daisy’s coming-of-age story. There is so much more to tell - and how I loved writing it! I hope you enjoy reading it too.

With love as always, Carol. x

About The Author

Mum and Dad were both East Enders who were born on the famous or should I say the then infamous Isle of Dogs. Their family were immigrants who travelled to the UK from Ireland and France, while others emigrated to America.

As a child I would listen to the adults spinning their colourful stories, as my cousins and I drank pop under the table.

I know the seeds of all my stories come from those far off times that feel like only yesterday. So I would like to say a big heartfelt thank you to all my family and ancestors wherever you are now ... UK, Ireland, France or America, as you've handed down to me the magic and love of story telling.
