Allan is fast becoming one of my favourite authors – having devoured and
enjoyed “Her Name Was Rose” last year, I was really looking forward to this her
latest offering.
“Forget
Me Not” begins with a short prologue, which turns out to be the dying thoughts
of a murdered woman, Clare. We’re not immediately told how or why Clare died, so
the story swiftly moves on, being told from two points of view – Rachel,
Clare’s close friend, and Elizabeth the middle-aged lady who, while out walking
her dog, found Clare dying. The book is written in the first person, with the
narrator of subsequent chapters alternating between Elizabeth and Rachel. This
is a clever technique which only adds to the suspense and keeps the reader
guessing and re-guessing as to what has actually happened, and what might
happen next.
One thing
I hate in book reviews is a plot spoiler, so I’ll only say that the author has
the gift of writing her story with a great flow and intensity, which develops
as Clare’s history and that of the other characters are gradually exposed – it
makes for a gripping read, with some surprising twists and turns, and an ending
that turned my theories on what had happened on their head! The story unravels its secrets in a
fascinating way and both the characterisation and plot are superbly detailed making
“Forget Me Not” a highly entertaining, easy read which had me hooked from start
to finish.
