Brook Cottage Books is thrilled to have not one, but two authors here in a great author interview with writing partnership Taylor Henderson and Sara Schoen. Read about their new book Bad Publicity too!
Do you write under your real name or is this a pen
name you use?
We
write under our real names, the pen name we use (Stolen Glances) is for our
“team” that represents Taylor and I, along with our friend/photographer. We use
it for our social media mostly so that it can be used for the both of us.
Where are you from?
We
are both from Northern Virginia. We met in high school in a creative writing
class. In Bad Publicity we even feature real names from our teachers.
Did you write as a child?
Sara:
I wrote teen fiction, and mystery. I didn’t start to expand until later in
life.
Taylor:
I wrote a lot of fantasy and fairy tales when I was really young. I even
dabbled in historical fiction. As I got older and become a teenager I switched
over to fiction, and to the genres that I write today.
What was the first thing you ever had published?
Sara:
I published the Amber Alert series first. It’s about a girl that’s kidnapped,
the the subsequent lives of those around/involved in the kidnapping.
Taylor:
I published The Dying Game with Sara, a horror story.
Do you have a writing routine?
We
both try to write a little each day. Together it seems that our routine has
become that I (Taylor) write the beginning of the first chapters of our
stories, and Sara writes the ending. She’s great with endings, and I love
beginnings.
Do you have any writing rituals?
Other
than forcing ourselves to write at least once a day, the only writing ritual
that we do is coming up with an outline for our books before we write them. We
also write down any idea we have that could be expanded on and turned into a
story some day.
Do you have a current work in progress?
Together
we are currently working on a kidnapping story called Captive, as well as a
suspense novel called Beach Week. Both are halfway complete. After we finish
those we will continue working on the other books in The Untamed Hearts Series.
Where did the idea for your book come from?
Our
life experiences, as well as a vague idea that didn’t come to fruition until we
sat down and worked on it together. It’s become our favorite story, and soon to
be our favorite series to have written.
Who was the first person you gave the book to read?
Our
fans on wattpad were the first to read this book, they gave us the
encouragement to push toward publication, and allowed us to know what we had to
improve upon after being rejected from one publisher, to later be accepted by
another.
Do you have any advice for budding
authors?
Perseverance and editing. No matter
how many times you read over your own story, you’ll change things, you'll
improve on it, and you’ll be even prouder of it. It’s a hassle, yes, but it’s
worth it. It’s even better when you edit and then get a yes from a publisher
after being told no by another.

BOOK BLURB
Strict parents make rebellious teens…
Jade Phillips wasn’t what everyone wanted her to be. She was supposed to
be an honor roll student, polite, and most of all, well behaved.
Instead she had a juvie rap sheet as long as her arm, a liver that
handled more alcohol than most Irish men, a partying habit that kept her
hungover on weekdays, and a bad attitude.
She wasn’t going to change for anyone, or so she thought…
Her father is remarrying, and his future wife, the senator of Virginia,
can’t afford to have Jade’s unruly behavior ruin her reputation.
That means no more drugs, alcohol, partying, and most of all, no more
arrests, or she will be forced to live with her overzealous grandmother in the
middle of nowhere leaving her friends behind. Now Jade has to make a choice,
either change for the better, or suffer the consequences. What will she do?
After all, no one’s ever been hurt by a little…
Bad publicity.
