"Red Nails" and Retail Therapy
Don't we all love retail therapy? And, don't we all love Becky from the "Shopaholic" series by Sophie Kinsella? And, can't we all relate to her in some way? I remember the first time I read the book. I was feeling the rush of wanting to buy a new scarf myself and having to fight off the temptation and not winning in the end but, then, she does win more than she bargained! As for me, I received my new scarf in the mail over a week later. Not like being right there but still a rush when you open the package and feel the softness of the fabric, and take in the beautiful colors. Let's forget about when you see the charge on your credit card statement and your heart sinks.
My novel, "Red Nails", is about a girl named "Hunter" who is left behind by her husband while he seeks out all things adventurous thinking it will bring him more happiness. He is on the loose chasing someone who has an "every two week" red nail regimen, as well as countless other mandatory beauty treatments. Hunter is left to take care of the house, getting dirt under her nails cutting grass, cleaning the basement and picking up tools scattered over the entire garage floor. Manicures and shopping for all things "lovely" are the furthest things from her life and fashion had always been one of her loves.....maybe a truer love than she had imagined.
When Hunter finally receives the cheque for her half of the house that had enslaved her for so many years, one of the first things she does after moving into her parent's house for a few months - which is the ultimate embarassment after the year alone - is drive to the nearest outlet shopping town and allows herself to go crazy in a TJ Maxx store. She had walked away from the marriage he didn't want anymore with one pair of jeans to her name.
Behind the scenes of "Red Nails", she sits surrounded by plastic bags stamped in red "TJMaxx" ink filled with "previous season" off-the-rack designer clothing. Her heart breaks again for the thousandth time after the high of "shopping made my life better" disappears. Crying for hours in that lonely hotel room, Hunter realizes she is a newly reborn shopaholic with unmanicured nails who just wants her marriage back - as well as a manicure. After the tears, the best she can do is put on the hot pink sweater and leather shoes, get something to eat, sit at the bar hoping the bartender will strike up a conversation and get dizzy from two drinks.
In the end, she spends countless hours listing and selling most of her fashionista finds on eBay, just as Becky put most of her purchases up for sale at auction to recoup the money she paid to eliminate her shopping debt. Hunter and Becky both hold onto the special pieces they just can't let go of....however, Becky's beautiful scarf is given back to her by the love of her life. In Hunter's case, she holds on to a piece of her marriage within her heart that just won't be driven out by anything. But, in the end, there is a sweet surprise where she is allowed to let go even more and choose her fate.
"Red Nails" is a "dramedy". It's about a love that is supposed to be forever but, in the end, becomes a disaster that the main character must face in a way that helps her survive. Drama, comedy, craziness and heartbreak all come together to create a genre that can be termed as "Wicked Chick-Lit". Perfect for Valentine's Day or Halloween....happy and horrific!
I hope you will find me on Twitter or Facebook. I'd love to hear from you. A very special thank you to Brook Cottage Books for allowing me to be a guest on their wonderful site!
