AUTHOR INTERVIEW
She loves love and strives to write feel-good romance that'll make you laugh and cry in equal measure.
Originally from South Wales, Katey now lives in Yorkshire with her husband and son.
Do you write under your real name or is this a pen name you
use?
I write as Katey Lovell.
Katey is a nickname, although most people in real life call me Kate, and
Lovell is my Great Grandma’s maiden name.
So although it’s not my real name, it’s not a total fabrication!
Where are you from?
I grew up in Monmouth, a picturesque market town on the
South Wales border, but I’ve now lived in Sheffield for eighteen years.
List 3 interesting facts about yourself.
I can tap dance. I
once auditioned for Countdown but never got offered a place on the show. And I’ve seen Take That in concert ten times.
What was the first thing you ever had published?
The very first thing I had published were letters to my
local newspaper as a teenager – mostly about issues such as recycling. Since
then I’ve had short stories published in anthologies and magazines and the
first MeetCute story, The Boy at the Bookshop, was published by Harper Impulse
last October.
Do you have a writing routine?
I work part time as Deputy Manager at a pre-school, so
fitting in writing isn’t always easy. I
generally have a few hours between getting home from work and collecting my son
Zach from school, so I try and ensure I write in that pocket of time. I nearly always write at home when everyone
else is out – I get distracted far too easily otherwise!
Do you have any writing rituals?
I tend to have a hot drink at my side, either black tea or
hot chocolate, and I often light a scented candle as I’m convinced it helps me
stay focused. My current favourite is
the White Tea Yankee Candle!
Where did the idea for your most recent book come from?
The Boy on the Bus
and The Boy with the Boxes are both
part of the Meet Cute series of short stories.
These two literally came from suggestions for titles from friends of
mine, and I built the story around the titles.
Who was the first person you shared your book with?
These were written back in 2014 and my friend April read
them long before they were accepted for publication. She was (and continues to be!) so encouraging
of my writing and told me to keep submitting even when the rejections were
getting me down.
Do you have a current work in progress?
I do! I’m currently
working on a novel about a group of friends who get together on Friday nights
to watch musicals rather than face getting hit on in town by random
strangers. It’s great fun to write and
it’s a good excuse for me to indulge and re-watch all my old favourite films.
Do you have any advice for budding authors?
It’s simple advice, but be persistent. The rejections hurt, but the joy when someone
believes in you more than makes up for it.
