EXTRACT
It wasn’t the just the smell of fresh air and sandalwood that alerted
Tori to the fact Mark had joined them. It was the way his shadow fell over her
as though covering her body with his wide, deep and potentially dangerous
protectiveness.
She didn’t bother to look at him...even though her Cally was seriously
looking. Tori lifted her hand in a half-hearted wave. “Take a seat, superhero.”
“I will.” He sat beside her. “Thank you.”
Every now and then, when she was alone at home, she’d picked up a book.
And every now and then, Tori would toss the book across the room whenever she
read the words, “the air crackled between them.” Well, whatever instantly
plagued the atmosphere between her and Mark as she forced her gaze to his, she
was loath to call it crackling. Maybe humming… screaming… burning… but
definitely not crackling.
She swallowed. “What are you doing here?”
“Olivia’s staying at a friend’s. I was at a loose end.”
Despite her best efforts to fight her smile, it was ruthless and broke
through her barriers like they were made of sugar paper. “Loose end, my ass.
You were no doubt pacing around the house and doing everything you could not to
get in the car and go get her.”
He smiled and put a glass on the table. “Merlot, right?”
Tori Peterson is broken. Well at least that's how she sees herself. After witnessing a childs abduction outside her niece's school, Tori is thrown back into the memories of her own abduction when she was a child. An experience that has haunted her ever since, tainting everything in her life, including relationships. It has hardened Tori, making it impossible for anyone to get through the impenetrable barrier she has put up to protect herself. However, Tori cannot forget the child, Abby who was abducted and is determined to save Abby even if that means putting herself back in danger, both physically and mentally. Tori might have escaped from her captor and she's determined Abby will too. On the day of Abby's abduction one of the fathers from the school comes to her aid. Mark Bolton is a widower and desperately trying to protect his daughter Olivia from the harsh realities of life. He couldn't save his wife but he can do everything in his power to look out for Olivia. However, the abduction has left him terrified for his daughter's safety and he is determined to help Tori find Abby, whether she wants his help or not. However, a figure from the past has come back to haunt Tori and the truth is more terrifying that she could ever have imagined. Hell, it had my heart racing!
Let me just start off by saying that I think this has to be the best book Rachel Brimble has written. I love all her books to date but my goodness she has totally excelled herself with If I Want You. The action begins immediately and the reader is thrown straight into the drama from the opening pages with barely time to come up for air. The story is both exciting and suspenseful and if its edge of your seat you want then you have it in this book. Add to that the romantic, sexy and 'oh dear me pass me something to waft myself with' moments then this book certainly has it all. The sexual attraction jumps off the pages!
Rachel Brimble has created such brilliant characters. Tori Peterson might have suffered a horrific experience as a child but she's a real hard ass, not taking no for an answer. She does not suffer fools gladly and is determined to use her job as a journalist to get things done rather than wait around for the police. But, under her hard exterior she's still that little girl crying for her parents and wanting to be safe. Mark Bolton recognises this vulnerability and not only does he want to protect Tori, he also wants to love her. He too tries to keep his fears and vulnerable side hidden and at the heart of it, he and Tori are more alike than either would care to admit. And, in true suspense fashion, Rachel Brimble has crafted the perfect psycho baddie! Love it! A few shocking OMG moments too! I really can't think of anything negative to say about this book. Get out there and buy it! Its on my list of highly recommended reads.
