The Graveyard Killings by Wes Markin is the 4th book in the Yorkshire murders series and can be read as a standalone book. That being said, I do wish I had read the other books in the series as I do think it would have been interesting to have delved deeper into the relationship dynamics of all the characters. However, starting on book 4 certainly didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of this cleverly plotted book.
Two detectives, old friends, colleagues and perhaps the suggestion of something more are brought back together when their cases seem to have some sort of an overlap and they need each other once again. Each character has their own demons to try to escape from and a past that they just can't shake. But, they are both dealing with those demons in very different ways with Riddick beginning to spiral once more and destroy any chance of happiness that he could have. The supporting characters are equally as interesting and weirdly I loved the annoying reporter. She totally irritated the life out of me as her character should have done. Sometimes I did get a bit lost with remembering the characters as there are quite a few with the different crimes being investigated. Flashbacks helped give some context to what was happening.
This is a really enjoyable book with quite a few twists and turns along the way with an ending I absolutely 100% did not see coming at all and I was quite shocked by. The storyline could at times be hard hitting as real life crime is but it was written very well. I love a strong female lead and Emma Gardner certainly took no nonsense. I really liked her. I felt very sorry for Riddick and the heartbreak he'd endured in his life. He often slipped up, doing the wrong thing for the right reasons and his relationship with a young man with additional needs was beautiful. Under the hard exterior he put up to protect his heart, was a kind and caring man. If I ever get the time I'm going to go back and read the other books in the series. A recommended read!
