- The Leap Year Proposal by Susan Buchanan : Author Interview & Giveaway
Three
women. One crazy hen weekend. A life-changing decision.
When three women meet on a mutual friend’s hen weekend on the Scottish island
of Arran, they get more than they bargained for when one of them has the genius
idea of proposing on 29 February, like the age-old Irish tradition.
High-flying businesswoman Anouska and boyfriend Zach are deliriously happy and
madly in love. If only they had more time together. But now she’s pregnant and
doesn’t know how to tell him since having kids hadn’t featured in their plans.
Dog walker Jess lives with her childhood sweetheart, but they’re already like
an old married couple, without the romance, or the wedding, or the ring. When
Mark doesn’t propose on New Year’s Eve, Jess is gutted and decides to take
matters into her own hands.
Ellie and Scott still live apart after six years, and his lack of commitment is
a sore point. She’s up for a huge promotion which involves moving country. It’s
make-or-break time. She needs to know he’s worth turning down the job for.
The women meet weekly, helping each other with decisions big and small,
becoming each other’s support system in the run-up to ‘the big ask’.
Will love conquer all or will their hopes and dreams come crashing down
around them?
Name: Susan Buchanan
Do you write under your real name or is this a pen name you
use? I write under my maiden name as
when I started writing I wasn’t married!
Where are you from?
I’m originally from a small town below the hills in Central
Scotland. I grew up less than half a mile from the glen!
List 3 interesting facts about yourself.
Interesting? Now you’ve got me! Erm, I speak 5 languages,
have been to 51 countries, including Azerbaijan and Peru, and used to run cross-country
for Scotland.
What was the first thing you ever had published?
Sign of the Times, which has been compared to Cold
Feet, the TV series (the original one). It’s the story of 12 people and how
they are interlinked – but they are all different signs of the zodiac. It’s set
in Scotland, Italy and Switzerland. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ll ever
write!
Do you have a writing routine?
Not really. It depends on my workload as I’m also an editor,
principally for indie authors. So I don’t write every day and tend to write in
bursts. I do writing-related tasks every day and of course I edit every day,
but I don’t write my own books every day, although I’d love to. When I am in
writing mode, though, I write in at least 40-minute stints (like a double
Pomodoro – pomodoro technique being 20 min bursts). I mainly write in my living
room, although if I get the chance I do go out to cafés.
I used to always listen to classical music whilst writing,
but now I prefer silence and solitude. If someone brought me a bacon roll and
coffee every couple of hours though, that would be much appreciated!
Where did the idea for your most recent book come from?
Well, funnily enough,
I proposed to my (now) husband on 29 February 2016! The book has nothing to do
with us, but I did get the germ of the idea from my own (unplanned) proposal!
Who was the first person you shared your book with?
I’m not actually sure as this one has been on the backburner
for a while. There’s a good chance it was my auntie, who is also one of my
stalwart beta readers!
Do you have a current work in progress?
I’ve just started
working, would you believe, on my Christmas 2025 book. I figured when am I
going to feel most Christmassy, if not at actual Christmastime, but after
Christmas.
Do you have any advice for budding authors? Write what you
can, when you can. You don’t need to have a set place or time, but it can help,
although this is a very individual thing. I’ve been known to write in the
doctor’s and dentist’s waiting room, and I always write at the hairdresser’s.
Don’t give up. There is always a route to getting your book to readers. Read,
in your genre, out of your genre, craft books. Join a writing group, or if
possible a professional organisation, so you are surrounded by like-minded
people. Try to do something related to your writing every day. It doesn’t need
to actually be writing and it can be as little as typing an email or note to
yourself about an idea for a character or location or plot point. I could go on
for the whole length of a book here.
Her books are Sign of the Times,
The Dating Game, The Christmas Spirit, Return of the Christmas Spirit, A Little
Christmas Spirit and Just One Day – Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.
As a freelance developmental editor,
copyeditor and proofreader, if she’s not reading, editing or writing, she’s
thinking about it.
She is a member of the Romantic
Novelists’ Association, the Society of Authors and the Alliance of Independent
Authors.
She lives near Glasgow with her
husband, two children and a crazy Labrador.
When she’s not editing, writing,
reading or caring for her two delightful cherubs, she likes going to the
theatre, playing board games, watching quiz shows and eating out, and she has
recently discovered a love of writing retreats.
