A shaky upbringing has left Rosie Stevens craving safety
and security. She thinks she knows exactly what she needs to make her life
complete – the stable job and perfect house-sit she’s just found in Magnolia
Creek. The only thing she wants now is for her long-term boyfriend, Adam, to
leave his overseas job and come home for good.
Owen Harrison is notoriously nomadic, and he roars into
town on his Ducati for one reason and one reason only – to search his parents’
house while they’re away to find out what they’ve been hiding from him his
entire life. When he meets Rosie, who refuses to quit the house-sit in his
parents’ home, sparks fly.
Secrets are unearthed, promises are broken, friendships are
put to the test and the real risk of bushfires under the hot Australian sun
threatens to undo Rosie once and for all.
Will Rosie and Owen find what they want or what they really
need?
What Rosie Found Next is the type of book that once picked up, is very difficult to put down. Helen J Rolfe has created a wonderfully warm community in Magnolia Creek with some loveable characters such as the wonderful Bella! Every town needs a wise woman such as Bella, offering sound advice when emotion takes over and all commonsense goes out the window and all done under the guise of a fresh scone!
From the outset I loved the interactions between Rosie and Owen. All poor Rosie wants to do is settle down and be a part of a family. Haunted by her past and a grief that consumes her daily, Rosie is immediately drawn to the idea of settling down and this is further reinforced when she house sits. She falls in love with the local community and loves being part of this rural family. However, her boyfriend Adam is more of a jet setting businessman who is career driven and Rosie's dreams of settling down are always dismissed by him in favour of chasing the next big promotion.
Owen also has his fair share of demons and feelings of inadequacy. Compounded by the knowledge that his parents are hiding a secret from him makes him determined to get Rosie out of the house so that he can search it to find out what is so terrible that his parents can't tell him. Despite his best efforts to get rid of Rosie, both seem to strike up a friendship that has lots of undertones of attraction, just bubbling on the surface. Rosie is not a woman who is easily manipulated and Owen finds himself drawn to her warm and outwardly fearless personality. Personally, I fell a little bit in love with her pink car!
This is a lovely book. A gentle story of grief, fear, love and friendship. Its about family secrets and taking a chance on a dream. And, I will even admit to heaving a tear filled sigh at some parts of the book. For me, this is definitely a recommended read that I finished in one sitting! I loved it! I can't wait to read more in the series and will be looking out for book 2.
