DI Hunter Wilson
knows there is a new supply of cocaine flooding his city and he needs to find
the source but his attention is transferred to murder when a corpse is
discovered in the grounds of a golf course. Shortly after the post-mortem,
Hunter witnesses a second murder but that is not the end of the slaughter. With
a young woman's life also hanging in the balance, the last thing Hunter needs
is a new man on his team: the son of his nemesis, the former Chief Constable.
Hunter's perseverance and patience are put to the test time after time in this
taught crime thriller.

“This
tartan noire book is a real coffee-cooler. I had three cups of coffee that went
cold, forgotten while reading. Val Penny created a cast of characters I want to
see in another book as soon as possible.
This
is a truly astonishing debut from a writer to watch for the future.
Believable
characters, gut-wrenching scenes, and a plot that sizzles along. A taut police
procedural that is up there with Ian Rankin, Alex Gray and Quintin Jardine.”
Hunter's Chase by Val Penny is the exciting first installment in the Edinburgh Crime Mysteries Series. The book is a great start to the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. D.I. Hunter Wilson is an old school cop. Not impressed that a new member of his team is the son of the former Chief Constable, a man he detests, Wilson must put aside his feelings about Tim Myercough's father and give him a chance to prove himself. However, its not going to be easy, especially when Tim's father discovers a body hidden in shrub land on his beloved golf course. Throw into the mix a steady stream of cocaine flooding the city and further crimes that may be connected and Wilson and his team are kept on their toes trying to tie it all together and bring those responsible to justice.
I enjoyed the characters throughout the book and although Hunter Wilson sometimes came across as a bit rough and ready he was a superb police officer with very little getting past him. At times I felt he was sometimes a bit of a lonely character too but fiercely passionate about getting to the bottom of the crimes that were tearing his beloved city apart. His team were well developed and each was interesting and appealing and have established a good basis for the next book in the series. The dialogue flowed naturally and the book was well paced. There were lots of little nuggets of information and clues dotted throughout the course of the book and one or two surprises too which I loved. A great book to get your teeth into and keep you gripped throughout. A recommended read.
